Under the Clean Water Act, protecting our drinking water is an important responsibility. You may be aware that Ontario Power Generation is seeking permission to construct and operate a facility to bury low and intermediate level radioactive contaminated items in an area 550 m. – 700 m. below the surface. The Deep Geological Repository (DGR) is proposed to be located on the Bruce Nuclear Site in Tiverton. Recently hearings into this project that have raised a number of concerns.
The city of London draws its drinking water from Lake Huron and Lake Erie. The Clean Water Act requires councillor’s accept a high standard of care in assessing risks and concerns with respect to issues that may impact our drinking water. A panel of individuals consisting of professionals who have expertise in the areas of law, nuclear issues, Clean Water Act, Great Lakes Charter Annex, Project data assessment and community engagement, will present their concerns at a public meeting on Nov. 20, 2013, 7–9 pm.
